1 Introduction

This Committee Note deals with the set of EDIFACT document types known collectively as the IFTM message set developed by UN/CEFACT. These document structures are used for consolidation purposes from a party arranging forwarding and transport services to the party for which the transport of the consolidated cargo is destined. The message set can be used to exchange information concerning the consolidated cargo between forwarders, carriers and agents enabling those parties to handle the consignments included in this consolidation. In addition it can be used for a collection of consignments originating from one shipper for forwarding and transport services. In addition it can be used for an advice of insurance related to a consolidation of consignments if the insured is the party arranging forwarding and transport services.

This document pertains to the implementation of the following messages:

IFCSUM, IFTMBF, IFTMBC, IFTMIN, IFTMCS, IFTMAN, IFTMCA

This document describes which segments to use/not use for:

  1. Messages dealing with individual consignments. Consignment details commence with the CNI segment - position 1130 for IFTM** messages

  2. Messages for consolidated consignments (IFCSUM)

The message definitions were obtained from this ZIP archive: http://www.smdg.org/assets/assets/TFM-Comm-100v20.zip

2 UBL mapping guidelines

This document defines the possible mappings of IFTM components to the OASIS Universal Business Language (UBL) version 2.1. They apply to data structures used in UBL document types BillOfLading, ForwardingInstructions and Waybill (as well as other document types used in intermodal and multimodal freight).

These mappings are provided as a guide to assist in migrating UN/EDIFACT transportation messages (based on the ITIGG guidelines) to an XML environment. As such it should be used as a suggested guideline only.

2.1 General comments

2.1.1 Insurances

A Transport Contract can be used for describing insurance related to consignments. For other insurances use Document Reference.

2.1.2 Freight charges

Currently the Charge Codes and Charge Types do not enough details to automatically create a freight invoice

2.1.3 Dates and times

Date elements are followed by an optional sister element for Times. For simplicity these are not included but can be assumed. Many Dates also allow an optional Period description as well.

All Date and Time formats should follow the W3C Schema data type for date and time.

2.1.4 Attributes for data types

Following the ebXML Core Component Technical Specification all Code type have attributes to describe the listID and the listAgencyID (if required).

Following the ebXML Core Component Technical Specification all Identifier types have attributes to describe the schemeID, schemeAgencyID (if required).

Following the ebXML Core Component Technical Specification all Measurement types have an attribute for unitCode (if required).

Following the ebXML Core Component Technical Specification all Amount types have an attribute for currencyID.

2.1.5 Use of Qualifiers

Following the principles of the ebXML Core Component Technical Specification qualifier terms are generally used in the names of elements. As such list of qualifiers for elements are not required.

The exceptions are where there is a controlled and fixed set of possible qualifiers.

For historical reasons there are some cases where a hybrid approach has been taken. Elements have qualified names and also a sister element that is unqualified and may be qualified by a code list.

These are noted when they occur in the mapping.

2.1.6 Free text field lengths

UBL has been designed as a transactional data description language and as such does not require formatting facets (such as fixed field lengths).

Values within text element may contain XML Control statements to support formatted on the text by suitably enabled applications.

Many UBL textual elements allow multiple occurrences. This is reserved for use where the same information may be required in different languages. These are not designed to convey different pieces of information such as different paragraphs or lines.

2.1.7 Functions

In XML documents the number of children for a parent can be derived because of the requirement for being well formed XML. Ending delimiters mean children cannot be dropped so integrity controls such as control totals are redundant.

2.1.8 Messaging fields

UBL documents are independent of the message exchange protocol of documents. Several common protocols are used to convert the document header and footer information (eg. UNH-UNT). These protocols define the messaging elements they require (i.e. the equivalent of the UNH-UNT structures).

2.1.9 Document distribution requirements

In UBL 2.1 the Forwarding Instruction lacks the ability to define what the distribution of the original and copies of Bills of Lading should be. This is to be included in the next release.

2.2 Complete mapping table

The IFTM message definitions available from the SMDG group (at http://www.smdg.org/assets/assets/TFM-Comm-100v20.zip) have been mapped onto UBL structures following a similar format.

The result is a large table provided as an attachment to this committee note:

The attachment explains the conventions used in formatting the tables and should provide enough details to enable UN/EDIFACT messages based on the IFTM standards to be mapped onto their UBL equivalent (and vice-versa).
