It appears that a Document_definition cannot be accessed from the identification_item select type which represents the items attribute of the identification_assignment entity. This means that it is not possible to assign an identifier to the document definition which is important when there may be more than one defined for a particular version document. This may be a slight oversight from when the PLCS schema was upgraded from DIS -> IS, where documents were brought more closely in line with other products. Indeed, other subtypes of Product_view_definition are within the scope of this select type, but at present we cannot consistently provide an identifier for Document_Definitions. Previously the Document_definition was an abstract entity but in the IS version this was removed, allowing document_definitions to be instantiated. I presume this was to allow exchanges when there was insufficient information to create one of the two sub-types (digital_document_definition or physical_document_definition). The subtypes of document_definition are permitted within the select type.

If this is an acceptable issue, I would suggest that this be raised as an issue against AP239.

I am not sure why you would need to identify the document_definition?

The major issue is the need to create referencing_document template. This should still happen
