These pages provide a document repository at OASIS for the DocBook Committee's work products.
The DocBook Technical Committee maintains the DocBook schema. DocBook V4.5 and earlier versions are officially available as Document Type Definitions (DTDs) for both XML and SGML. They are unofficially available in other forms as well, including RELAX NG and W3C XML Schema.
Test releases of DocBook V5.0 is also available now. It is normatively defined with a RELAX NG Grammar though it is also available informally in other forms as well.
DocBook is an XML/SGML vocabulary particularly well suited to books and papers about computer hardware and software (though it is by no means limited to these applications).
The OASIS DocBook SubCommittee for Publishers is chartered to develop and maintain official variants of DocBook in support of the publishing industry. Specifically, the subcommittee will focus on schema and stylesheet customizations to support: periodicals as regularly published technical notes or journals, book publishing (such as business, legal, medical, and other non-technical domains), educational textbooks and other document types as appropriate for this industry.
